Regional Government of Navarra R&D Projects: RMW-PI-RGP-VRP

The project seeks the development of a prototype process consisting of an innovative design of a Microwave Induced Plasma Reactor (Rpl), which achieves the transformation complete Biogas (Methane + Carbon Dioxide, CH4/CO2) and pyrolysis gases complex chemical composition (from plastics and other waste), to enriched Syngas (in Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide: H2/CO), improving the energy content of Syngas, its ease of use for chemical synthesis (polymers, synthetic fuels, among others) and its use as a source of H2.

The process will integrate: the aforementioned Rpl Reactor to be developed, with a gasification reactor by microwave already developed in another project (Rgas), a condensation stage and separation of pyrolysis gas compounds to be prepared ad-hoc, and a Centralized Information and Control (SIC), to be programmed and integrated with the precise Sensors of regulation-optimization of necessary chemical reforming and catalytic cracking processes. The high energy plasma induced by the Microwaves themselves in Rpl will allow the obtaining of Syngas in an energy efficient way through: 1-decomposition reactions of non-condensable gases from Rgas (by catalytic cracking), and 2- reforming of Biogas, to controlled stoichiometries through the possibility of additionally injecting gases reagents (CO2 and H2O).
